Poock, Alita R.
Alita R. Poock, 91, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner from natural causes. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Sumner. Interment will be at Lutheran Cemetery of Sumner Township, rural Sumner. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. Sunday at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour before services at the church on Monday.
Alita Rose, the daughter of John and Alvina (Hoppenworth) Pipho, was born April 7, 1919, in Maxfield Township, Bremer County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church (Maxfield). She attended Maxfield Township School No. 3 and graduated from Denver High School in 1937. Alita graduated from Wartburg College in 1939 and taught in the Denver Schools for two years before her marriage. Alita was united in marriage with Walter L.H. Poock on June 15, 1941, at St. John Lutheran Church (Maxfield). The couple farmed in the Readlyn and Tripoli areas until 1949, when they purchased a farm near Sumner. They farmed there until 1984 when they moved into the town of Sumner. Walter preceded her in death on Sept. 17, 2002.
Alita was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sumner and had been active in the Ladies Aid and the Adult Bible Class.
Alita is survived by four children, Darwin (Sandra) Poock of Alburnett, Virgil (Claudette) Poock of Sumner, Junever (George) Heying of Sumner and Randall (Nicole) Poock of Hampton; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-granddaughter; and one sister-in-law, Isadore Pipho of Denver, Iowa.
Alita was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; two sons, one son who died in infancy and Myron Poock; one granddaughter, Susan Helin, who died in 2005; her parents; five brothers, Ewald, Herman, John Jr., Ernest and Henry Pipho; and three sisters, Agnes Pipho, Anna Mueller and Alma Lehs.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or to the Hillcrest Home, both in Sumner.
Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is in charge of arrangements.
