Alice Poppe, 98, of rural Monticello, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello, with interment in Wayne Zion Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. The Rev. Wade Reddy will officiate at the services. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, has been entrusted with Alice's care and services. Thoughts, memories and condolences may be left at www.goettschonline.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wayne Zion Lutheran Church.
Surviving are three siblings, Pauline Antons of Center Junction, George (Bonnie) Tobiason of Monticello and Marilyn (Ken) Streeper of Anamosa; a brother-in-law, Eugene (Nancy) Poppe; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ervin, in 1990; and her sister, Bernice Bull.
Alice Christine Tobiason was born April 11, 1918, in Wayne Township, Jones County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Henry and Eliza Zimmerman Tobiason. Alice received her education in Wayne Center School. Alice Christine Tobiason and Erving G. Poppe were married on Oct. 21, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed in Wayne Township until 1980, when Ervin retired. Alice worked at the Monticello Senior Home, where she was the head of housekeeping for 18 years, retiring in November 1986. She then went to work at Yeoman and Company for three years.
Alice was a lifelong member of Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. She was baptized May 5, 1918, and confirmed her faith on April 9, 1933. Alice was a member of the Wayne Zion Quilters Club and the neighborhood coffee hour. She loved playing euchre at family gatherings and the senior potluck at Wayne Zion. She was an avid gardener and loved her flowers.
