Barto, Howard J. 'Pete'
Howard J. “Pete” Barto, 91, of Maquoketa, formerly of Oxford Junction, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Jackson County Regional Health Center, Maquoketa. A celebration of his life service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at Lahey Funeral Home in Oxford Junction, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in Mayflower Cemetery, Oxford Junction, with military honors accorded by Oxford Junction American Legion Wapsie Post 473.
Howard J. Barto was born April 30, 1919, in Oxford Junction, Iowa, to Joe J. and Julia J. (Beranek) Barto. He graduated from Oxford Junction High School. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving from 1942 to 1945.
He farmed all of his life. He was a member of Oxford Junction American Legion Wapsie Post 473 and served on the Oxford Junction Fire Department and the Oxford Junction Ambulance for 25 years. He was also a member and past president of Mayflower Cemetery Board for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Fred Barto; and his wife, Grace.
Memorials may be given to the Holden Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City.
