Goodman, Vellie Diane
Vellie Diane Goodman was born Nov. 14, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Edd and Elizabeth (Lekin) Carlson. She graduated from North-Linn High School in 1967. On June 30, 1973, she married Larry D. Goodman at the United Methodist Church in Millersburg. They farmed together west and south of Millersburg. Vellie worked various places as a waitress, cook and caregiver. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking, her flowers, listening and dancing to Larry's dance band, going out to eat and attending the Old Thresher's Reunion, which she did for 40 years. She was an excellent baker and was known for her fresh baked dinner rolls. Vellie also enjoyed flying with Larry and having picnics with him by the river. She enjoyed taking the train to Pittsburgh to visit her daughter and grandchildren. Vellie died on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at her home near Millersburg. She lived 63 years.
Her memory will be cherished by her husband, Larry Goodman; daughter, Angela (Morgan) Hanson; and three grandchildren, Tom, James and Amelia Hanson, all of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Also surviving is a brother, Edd (Peggy) Carlson of Springville; three sisters, Cindy (Steve) Holub of Delmar, LuAnn (Pat) Benesh of Walker and Sara (Bryan) Doyl of Walker: a sister-in-law, Linda Carlson of Coggon; a brother-in-law, Virgil (Betty) Goodman of North English; and sister-in-law, Shirley (Glenn) Shafar of Williamsburg.
Vellie was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, David Carlson; her mother and father-in law, Essie and Andy Goodman; and a sister-in-law, Maxine (Goodman) Driscoll.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Millersburg United Methodist Church. The Rev. Michelle Williamson will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Burial will be in the Millersburg Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center in Iowa City.
