To the editor:
Look inside the high-tech exterior of the Cedar Rapids Public Library and you'll find an extraordinary resource for our community. From books and digital resources to extensive programming and services, the library offers something for everyone, seven days a week. For businesses, this includes access to meeting rooms and special event spaces, technology training, online databases and numerous opportunities for lifelong learning. Its innovative literacy programs and partnerships with local agencies that support children and families helps build a stronger community and nurture our future workforce. According to corporate relocation experts, a public library is one of the top assets companies and individuals consider when evaluating the health and cultural vitality of a community.
The library has seen exponential growth in the use of civic spaces, going from 11,000 people per year using meeting rooms pre-flood, to more than 100,000 last year. The Ladd Library, that serves the west side of Cedar Rapids, opened in 2013, expanding service from a small pre-flood location in the former Westdale Mall to a full service library branch. The Ladd Library circulates 100,000 more items per year than the pre-flood location.
With over 1,800 people using our library every day - more than any other library in the state - I can't think of a better value and a smarter investment in the future of our community. As an active member of the Cedar Rapids business community, please join me in supporting the library by voting 'yes” for the library levy on Nov. 3.
