UPDATE: Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy from Hiawatha for allegedly shooting a man in southeast Cedar Rapids late Sunday.
Timothy L. Reynolds, 17, of 55 Robins Rd., has been charged with attempted murder after witnesses identified him as the shooter in the incident in the 1400 block of Fourth Avenue SE, police said.
The victim, 38-year-old Christopher Pearson, is expected to survive, police said. Pearson was shot once in the abdomen around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, and was laying on the ground near his residence when officers arrived. Pearson, who lives at 1411 Fourth Ave. SE, was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Pearson remained in the intensive care unit Monday morning.
Officers located Reynolds about an hour after the shooting at the Rose Apartments, 1407 Third Ave. SE, which is about a block from the crime scene. An investigation led officers to apartment No. 5, where they found a handgun.
Reynolds gave police a fake name and was arrested for interference with official acts. He taken to the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center.
Investigators worked through the night and spoke to Pearson at the hospital Monday morning. Witnesses told police Reynolds and Pearson exchanged words just before the shooting. The attempted murder charge was filed early Monday morning.
Police believe Reynolds acted alone and fired just one gunshot before running away, Hamblin said. They aren't sure what led to the original dispute.
“After (Pearson) is better, we'll get more statements from him,” Hamblin said.
Police say Reynolds will be charged as an adult because he is within six months of his 18th birthday.
