Schoonover, Howard D.
Howard D. Schoonover, 63, died Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, from lung cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart with the Rev. James R. Radatz officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Burial at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Garrison Cemetery.
Howard was born May 31, 1949, in Waterloo, the only child of Howard and Emma Jabens Schoonover. He was raised and attended school in Garrison, graduating in 1967. He received his Bachelor of Special Education and his Master of Education degrees from UNI. Howard taught elementary school until his father's death in 1982, when he took over the farming operation. He was currently serving as vice president of the Benton County Farm Bureau.
Howard was an avid reader and especially liked science fiction. He enjoyed European automobiles and playing cards. Howard liked the Iowa Hawkeyes, riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, eating out and traveling. His trip to Germany to the Jabens homestead was an especially memorable trip.
He is survived by his wife, Anne, Garrison; children, Beth (Carlos) Walker, Marion, Todd (Petra) Flaherty, Waterloo, and Ryan (Lori) Flaherty, Independence; grandchildren, Evan, Owen, Emily and Isabella; and numerous cousins.
Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home is caring for Howard and his family.
