While in the military, I was thankful for the most advanced technology and weaponry possible. The access to this kind of premium hardware helped me execute my duties as a soldier and protected me in the process. Yet decades have passed since then, and the battlefields our troops face today are unparalleled to those of the past.
Because of this, I believe it is important that our leaders advocate and support programs like the F-35 Lightning II. These jets are well equipped for the U.S. military for a multitude of reasons. They help us to sustain a technological edge, protect national security and strengthen our NATO allies. The unique design of the F-35 serves a multi-role purpose in today's military as its three variations are utilized by the U.S. Air Force, Marines, and Navy in addition to allies overseas. This is something no legacy aircraft has done before.
To me, this seems like an opportunity that allows us to be more efficient economically and strategically. The F-35 program also shows signs of stabilization as operations and sustainment costs came down about $23 billion and production costs decreased by approximately $7.5 billion last year. It is important that as costs are driven down, we continue to drive up production. Cedar Rapids-based Rockwell Collins is a key supplier of jobs in our region. Rockwell Collins is also one of many manufacturers contributing to the F-35 across the nation.
I am thankful Sen. Joni Ernst has pledged her support to this program.
