Letter: Burning the flag should be illegal

I believe that burning the United States flag should be illegal. It is the ultimate sign of disrespect to your country and to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives to give people the right to protest and live free. Not being able to burn a flag does not infringe on your right to protest, as it would not prevent you from protesting. Everyday soldiers fight to protect our freedom and that flag. If you are burning it, you might as well be spitting in the face of that soldier who gave his life to allow you to protest. Donald Trump is talking about jail time and a loss of citizenship. The punishment should not be that severe, but something has to be done.
Flag burning should be illegal, when you burn a flag you are disrespecting your country and the soldiers who gave their lives to protect you.
