The prep baseball season in Iowa is only about 10 games old, but Gatorade already has declared Cedar Rapids Kennedy outfielder-pitcher-first baseman Austin Christensen its state player of the year.
The Gatorade Company, in collorabation with ESPN RISE, "recognzes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field" in choosing its winners.
Christensen has signed to play with the University of Nebraska. He recently set Kennedy's career home run record and is hitting .684 (26 of 38) with six doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and 27 RBIs in 13 games.
He has walked 13 times and struck out just five.
