Rockwell Collins is an avionics and aerospace technology company. It makes cockpit displays, and radar systems, among other products. It recently acquired a company that makes products for plane interiors, such as airline seats.

It is the largest employer in Cedar Rapids and has a significant office footprint, owning or leasing about three million square feet of space in the city and another 200,000 square feet in Coralville.

Rockwell breaks its business into four segments - commercial systems, government systems, information management services and interior systems. The last two are connected to other companies Rockwell acquired.

United Technologies Corp. is a multinational conglomerate, which means it owns multiple other businesses.

It's business divisions include aircraft engine maker Pratt and Whitney; elevator manufacturer Otis Elevator Co.; UTC Climate, Controls and Security, which makes Carrier air conditioners; and UTC Aerospace Systems, which produces aircraft landing systems, propellers and reconnaissance systems.

UTC Aerospace Systems is based in Charlotte, N.C., and has about 40,000 employees.

UTC will combine its aerospace systems division with Rockwell to form Collins Aerospace Systems. The new division will have about 70,000 employees.
