Marks, Earl Francis
Earl Francis Marks, 79, of Wilton, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bentley Funeral Home in Wilton. Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 11, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Serving as casket bearers will be his grandchildren. Interment will take place at Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton.
Earl “Butch” Marks was born Aug. 26, 1932, to Raymond and Velma (Schmidt) Marks in Tipton, Iowa. He married Kathryn Butterfield on Dec. 29, 1952, in Rowley. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1951. He proudly served his country in the United States Army in the Marshall Islands during the Korean War.
In his early years, Earl was co-owner of Marks' Grocery and Locker in Rowley. He later was employed and retired from the USDA as a federal meat inspector in 1994 after 26 years of service.
He was a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge of Muscatine and many years at the Wahkonsa Country Club. Earl loved the outdoors: hunting, fishing, camping and boating. He looked forward to his Thursday afternoon poker games. Earl enjoyed traveling and wintering in Texas. Above all, he enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Kathryn Marks of Wilton; his daughter, Cindy and her husband, Jim Gavin, of Wilton; his sons, Brent and his wife, Deanna Marks, of Wilton, Curt and his wife, Cathy Marks, of Dubuque, and Jim and his wife, Angie Marks, of Dana Point, Calif.; his grandchildren, Jared and his wife, Carmen Marks, of Canton, Mich., Kyle Marks of Salt Lake City, Utah, Erin Gavin of Dubuque, Amanda Gavin of Wilton, Colby Marks of Dana Point, Calif., and Sawyer Marks of Dana Point, Calif; his brother, Russell and his wife, Janet Marks, of Cedar Rapids; and his sister-in-law, Ruby Marks of Rowley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jean Long; and his brothers, LeRoy, LeVell, Don and Roger Marks.
Memorial donations may be made to the Wilton First Responder or the Durant Ambulance in his memory.
