WBB: Prins gets 1,000, Cyclones prep for KSU

AMES - Twenty-four.

That's how many Iowa State women's basketball players have scored at least 1,000 points in their careers.

Now Anna Prins ranks among them - and it was news to the Cyclones points after she surpassed the 1,000-points mark by scoring a season-high 19 in Wednesday's 67-48 win at Texas.

“I wasn't aware (of it), but obviously, it's fun to be considered in that category,” said the 6-7 senior, who looks for more production in Saturday's 1 p.m. Big 12 matchup with Kansas State at Hilton Coliseum. “I haven't thought too much about it.”

No. 25 ISU (16-5, 7-4) is tied with Texas Tech for third place in the league standings, but already has swept the Red Raiders.

The Brittany Chambers-led Wildcats (12-0, 3-7) have lost five straight regular season games against the Cyclones, but ousted them in last year's conference tournament.

Chambers ranks second in the Big 12 in scoring at 18.7 points per game.

“Whenever we've played Kansas State, Brittany's always been the player we've focused on because she has the ball so much,” ISU coach Bill Fennelly said. “We have a video of her dribbling 25 times and getting a layup. She'll dribble the ball all over the place until something happens. And her range is as deep as any player we've ever faced.”

K-State has made the second-most 3-pointers among league teams with 181, but ranks next-to-last in 3-point field goal accuracy at 27.6 percent.

Why?

The Wildcats have launched 616 attempts from long range - 122 more than ISU, which ranks second in the Big 12 in 3-pointers attempted.

“It's like over 50 percent (of shots) are threes,” Fennelly said. “They beat Oklahoma State and made (a school record) 16 of them.”

Prins is used to tangling with tall, physical players in the paint, not extending 20 feet from the basket.

“I've been in a few situations (like that),” said Prins, who has scored 1,012 points. “It's not my favorite.”
