Rettig running on financial management, transparency
Janelle Rettig

Four years ago, it was hard for anyone - citizen or employee - to find financial information about Johnson County. The county wasn't hiding anything; financial information just wasn't available in an easy format. When I asked for a copy of the budget, I was given a one page copy of something printed in the newspaper.
One of my goals has been financial management and transparency. While most of this work isn't headline news, we've worked very hard in this area. We now have a reserve policy, updated financial policies, a detailed budget presentation, regular budget reports, a finance department, and a growing finance page on our website. The newest addition to our financial page is the Transparency Portal, which includes revenues, expenditures and checkbook lines by service area and department.
Having strong financial management is important because it puts the county in a better position to accomplish other overall goals. For example, maintaining a commitment to enhancing the quality of life through economic development, expanding recreation and conservation, and investing in human services, mental health/disability services, and block grants to local agencies. (One of the things I am most proud of is selling 1105 S. Gilbert Ct. to the Crisis Center for $1, helping launch the 1105 Project.)
Other goals seeing accomplishments are sustainability and a broader commitment to rebuilding and maintaining roads, paved shoulders, and trails. We've completed the Dubuque Street trail. In addition, we've created a sustainability plan, hired a coordinator, established stormwater management standards and created wind energy facilities and downcast outdoor lighting ordinances.
While we have accomplished much, my to do list for the county continues to grow. Some of these goals include: Expand funding for human services; increase conservation; expand recreational opportunities; diversify our economy, including local foods and rural tourism; good infrastructure; centralize general and vehicle purchasing and fleet management; better use employees by cross training and job sharing; strong financial management; and investment in sustainable buildings and grounds with renewable energy.
I work hard, listen, study issues, find common ground and demand fiscal responsibility. I would very much appreciate your vote on or before Nov. 4.
