Burlage, Donald L.
Donald L. Burlage, 85, of 7658 Fortman Rd., Worthington, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at his home. Friends and relatives of Donald may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, where a prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. Services for Donald will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Phillip Kruse officiating. Concelebrating will be the Rev. Douglas Loecke and the Rev. Joseph McDermott, SVD. Assisting Deacon, will be Frederick Pins. Burial will be held in St. Paul's Cemetery.
Donald was born Aug. 4, 1924, on the family farm in Dodge Township in rural Worthington, son of Theodore and Susan Sophia (May) Burlage. He received his education in the country schools in Dodge Township and St. Francis Xavier School. On Oct. 15, 1955 he was united in marriage to Margaret “Mickey” Kennedy by Fr. William A. Mullen at St. Clements Catholic Church in Bankston. He farmed on the “Burlage Century Farm” in Dodge Township all his life.
He was a long time member of Dubuque County (ICA) and National cattlemen's Association. He was inducted into the Dubuque County Cattlemen Hall of fame in 1999. He was also a member of the Dubuque County Farm Bureau. He was a member of St. Paul's Parish, Worthington, its Altar and Rosary Society, and served on its Parish Council for many years. He also served on the Beckman High School Booster Club Board. He was an avid fan of Beckman High School sports. Don believed in supporting local organizations. He enjoyed playing cards with friends and neighbors, bowling, Monday trips to the sale barn, coffee at the local feed store, and watching his granddaughters activities. The three loves of his life were his family, feeding cattle and the St. Louis Cardinals.
He is survived by his wife, Mickey Burlage of Worthington; one daughter, Rebecca “Becky” (David) Lansing of Worthington; three granddaughters, Nicole, Callie and Jenna Lansing.
He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lester, Lawrence (Frances), and Elmer (Dorothy); five sisters, Ida (Laverne) Engler, Lucille (Emil) White, Irene (Andy) Hostert, Florence and Mildred Burlage.
A Donald L. Burlage memorial fund has been established.
