Stony Brook University's football team has a ground game.
How tough an FCS team might you be if you're second-leading rusher was the Big Ten's second-leading rusher a season ago?
Marcus Coker had 19 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown in SBU's 49-17 win over Central Connecticut State last Saturday. He scored on a 4-yard run for the first points in the game, seen by 6,094 fans at Stony Brook, N.Y.
But Coker was second-banana, at least for one game. Senior teammate Miguel Maysonet, who rushed for 1,633 yards last season for the Seawolves, rushed for 171 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, and scored on a 25-yard pass play.
Maysonet was the Big South Conference's Offensive Player of the year in 2011. The same season, Coker rushed for 1,384 yards and 15 touchdowns for Iowa. He transferred to Stony Brook last January.
Stony Brook had 303 rushing yards in Game 1. This Saturday, the Seawolves play Pace at home. The following Saturday, they step up in class considerably when they play at Syracuse, and get a second game against an FBS team when they visit Army on Sept. 29.
Another Hawkeye running back of last season who is now on an FCS squad is Mika'il McCall, of Southern Illinois.
McCall carried 11 times for 56 yards and two touchdowns, and had four catches for 90 yards and a TD in the Salukis' 49-28 loss at Eastern Illinois. His receiving TD was on a screen pass that McCall turned into a 74-yard score.
"My goal was to put 150 yards up out on the field, but still we lost and I'm disappointed," McCall said in a story on SIU football's Web site. "There are things I could've done better to prevent that."
Southern Illinois gets some FBS competition this week when it plays at Miami (Ohio).
