Helen Agatha Hyland, 97, of Tama, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2016, at Premier Estates of Toledo under the care of Iowa River Hospice. A memorial mass will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 28, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher as celebrant. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama and then a Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at the Tama-Toledo Country Club.
Helen was born March 24, 1918, in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Edward and Mary (McCarty) Kilbride. She graduated from Cathedral High School in Portland. On April 11, 1944, she was united in marriage to John Louis Hyland in Portland. Helen was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama and volunteered for Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown. She enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, knitting and crossword puzzles. Helen also loved to read.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Hyland of Sacramento, Calif., and Jane Murphy of Tama; one step-granddaughter, Stacey Messick of Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, John, on Sept. 8, 1982; one daughter, Anne Hyland; three brothers; and three sisters.
Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama or Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown.
