Midday Tuesday: Peter King says Adrian Clayborn going to the _____, no Iowa teams in the 2012 NCAA men's basketball tourney
Mike Hlas Apr. 19, 2011 3:36 pm
The New Orleans Saints.
King, in his one and only 2011 mock draft for Sports Illustrated, says who he thinks will be drafted and when, and who should have been taken in that spot.
He says Tampa Bay should take defensive end Adrian Clayborn of Iowa at No. 20, but will instead take Missouri DE (and Cedar Rapids native) Aldon Smith. He says New Orleans will take Clayborn at No. 24, and should do so.
Says King:
Personnel men I've spoken to are very high on Smith, but Clayborn, though he'll likely be a right end only, looks better suited to be an edge rusher than Smith.
A very strong proviso here: Watch out for Alabama RB Mark Ingram. I think he's the player Sean Payton loves the most at 24. But he looks at his running back crop, including undrafted free agents Chris Ivory and Pierre Thomas, and knows he can get a good back later. He also realizes it's now or never to get a defensive end who's got a chance to be a pass-rush force.
Switching to college basketball, for reasons that couldn't possibly be made clear, Joe Lunardi of ESPN.com has his first bracket filled out ... for the 2012 NCAA men's tournament.
Seven Big Ten teams are listed. Five are from the Big 12. One is from the Missouri Valley. None are from Iowa.
It's mostly the usual suspects. Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State and Illinois are all picked to make return-appearances. But Lunardi has Indiana sneaking into the field. At 3-15, the Hoosiers were the only Big Ten team to finish below 4-14 Iowa in 2011.
I guess that's why they play the games.
You always hear ESPN bragging how Lunardi got 64 out of 65 or 67 out of 68 teams right on Selection Sunday, when it's all pretty cut and dried except for the final few at-large teams. You don't hear how many he gets right 11 months before the tournament brackets are filled.
Adrian Clayborn's future team?
