Walter H. James died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, at Mercy Iowa City at the age of 87 years.
Walt was born March 12, 1929. in Ottumwa, Iowa. the son of Earnest and Anna Alfreda "Alfa" (Hardesty) James. He attended school in Wapello County. Walt owned and operated W. H. James Earth Construction for 36 years. He married Dorothy L. Hill in 1947. Together they had three children. They later divorced. On July 8, 1967, Walt was united in marriage to Lana Beth Gerard, in Coralville. He enjoyed reading and visiting with friends.
Walt is survived by his wife, Lana of Millersburg; three daughters, Mary Joan (Marlin) Christian of Tipton, Cheryl James-Heisch of Walcott and Debra James (Mark Kremer) of Pacific Palasades, Calif.; six grandchildren, Clinton Kutcher of Walcott, Carmon Kutcher (Ray Wolski) of Chicago, Michael Christian (Karen Hemstead) of Lone Tree, Mark (Erica) Christian of Tipton and Matthew Kremer and Josephine Kremer, both of Pacific Palasades; six great-grandchildren, Caleb, Conner, Miles and Maxson Christian, Ryan and Katie Slaughter; and his two special daughters, Shelly Gerard and Roberta Voelkel, both of Millersburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, John Middleton; two sisters, Tamara Jungen and Charlotte McSparen; and a son-in-law, Kenneth Heisch.
Celebration of Life memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at Powell Funeral Home, North English. The Rev. Michelle Williamson and Ric Gerard will officiate. Burial will be in Millersburg Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home.
