Mary Maxine (Voorhees) Donegan, 75, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Jan. 8, 2014, in her home with her husband and friends at her side.
Mary was born Feb. 24, 1938, in Clinton, Iowa, to Lloyd and Elsie (Bousselot) Voorhees. She attended country school in a one-room school house until fourth grade and attended DeWitt Public Grade School and graduated from DeWitt Public High School in 1956. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She married John Pheiffer and was later divorced. She was united in marriage to Roger D. Donegan on March 28, 1981. Mary and Roger had 33 wonderful years together. She was employed by Eagle Signal in Davenport and after her marriage to Roger, began work with Master Builders in Cedar Rapids.
She held memberships and was involved with various organizations throughout her life. Some of those included VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Cabane 40 & 8 Club, Social Order of Beauceant, Order of the Eastern Star, where she was Worthy Matron of Malta Chapter in Cedar Rapids and Worthy Matron of Star of the East Chapter in Bettendorf, the Past Worthy Matron's Club of Cedar Rapids, Golden Girls Golf Club and the Lady's Golf League at St. Andrews.
Also, Mary enjoyed the many years she was involved with Roger at the El Kahir Shrine and the many close friendships she was blessed with as a result.
Surviving are her husband, Roger D. Donegan; her brothers, John L. Voorhees of Seattle, Wash., and Harold E. Voorhees and wife Betty of Urbandale; a son, Richard W. Donegan and wife
Claudia of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Brendan J. Donegan and wife Paula and Carolyn J. Donegan Webb and husband David, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; great-grandchildren, Micaela, Abigail and Aidan Donegan and Lillyan and Madelyn Webb; and her very special friends, Mrs. Jackie Marshall and Mr. and Mrs. Tom and Cindy Nutt. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members and a host of friends.
A gathering to celebrate Mary's life will be held at the El Kahir Shrine Activities Center and Embassy Club at 1400 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402 from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, where a memorial service will take place at 2 p.m., officiated by Chaplain Tom Boeckmann. Private inurnment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
