Don Bosco climbs to top in 8-man football
Jeff Linder Oct. 13, 2014 3:34 pm
It has taken seven weeks, but Don Bosco has returned to the summit of eight-man football in Iowa.
The defending state champion Dons are a unanimous No. 1 in the Gazette/KCRG/KGYM rankings, released Monday.
Don Bosco improved to 7-0 on Friday with a 66-0 whipping of Colo-Nesco, its 21st straight victory. The Dons' climb to the top was aided by Newell-Fonda's 54-15 upset of previous No. 1 Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton.
The other top teams remain the same. Cedar Rapids Washington is on top of Class 4A for the second straight week, moving to 7-0 with a 28-6 defeat of Cedar Rapids Prairie. The Warriors received six of seven first-place votes and tallied 69 points, compared to 64 for No. 2 Bettendorf.
Pella (3A), Clear Lake (2A), Fort Dodge St. Edmond (1A) and Maquoketa Valley (Class A) are the top teams in the other classes. All are 7-0.
Linn-Mar (6-1) jumped back into the 4A poll at No. 7 after holding Cedar Falls to minus-26 rushing yards in a 22-14 victory at Linn-Mar Stadium.
West Delaware (7-0) remains No. 2 in Class 3A. Solon (6-1) and Cedar Rapids Xavier (5-2) are fourth and fifth.
Xavier hosts 1A No. 2 Iowa City Regina (6-1) this week.
