Celebrate single, middle-aged women
The Gazette Opinion Staff
May. 19, 2010 12:23 am
What is going on with our society?
At age 51, I am technically of middle age. And, as a single, never-married woman, there are many who would assume, sigh, that I must be a lesbian. Would it ever occur to those who question the sexual orientation of a middle-aged single woman, that maybe, just maybe, she is single by choice?
Oh sure, I would give my left hooter to be paired with a “nice” fellow; thus far, a well-deserving, opposite-gender suitor has not yet swept me off my feet enough for me to give up my singleness.
A marriage is not necessarily an indicator of sexual orientation nor the sole determining factor of success, love, stability, responsibility, morals, ethics or the like. If marriage were a superior status in our society, why are divorce and infidelity rates at historic highs?
Despite the fact that single, middle-aged women must work even harder to get anywhere because we don't have a man to go to bat for us in this male-driven society, we still rise to the top in whatever we set out to accomplish.
Why not look upon the middle-aged single woman as someone to celebrate?
And for those who are wondering: I'm not a lesbian, nor am I packing a weapon of mass destruction. And I left my chastity belt back in the dark ages.
