DAVID A. HEYING
Cedar Rapids
David A. Heying, 52, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
David was the son of Elizabeth Wade (John Wade) of Cedar Rapids and Robert Heying (d) (Karen Heying) of Kewanee, Ill.
David is survived by his sister, Lauren (Bruce) Potter of San Jose, Calif.; stepsister, Sherri (Doug) White of Marion; and half sister, Missy (Troy) Meyer of Oelwein.
David attended West High School and the University of Iowa. He also traveled throughout Europe in his 20s before finding his passion of "connecting and climbing iron." He was a member of Ironworkers Local 67, Des Moines. A proud member of the brotherhood, he loved his job and the lifestyle of traveling from project to project. He helped erect many of the wind towers across Iowa as well as high rise buildings in the Des Moines area. His nieces, Sofie and Lexi, love to tell their classmates that their Uncle David built their school (all on his own)!
David spent the winters in whatever warm location his sister, Lauren, was residing in at the time. He took his hard earned pension and retired in 2014 from iron work.
Our David didn't know a stranger and made friends wherever he went. He had a generous soul and took joy in helping others.
Special thanks to all of his longtime friends, including John Lanik and Kip Sheldon as well as their families, for easing this time for David and his family.
A celebration of life has tentatively been scheduled in late May 2016. Those interested in attending look for social media updates coming in February.
Bequests to honor David may be made to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, 315 18th Ave., Hiawatha, IA 52233.
