Glaser, Arnold W.
Arnold W. Glaser, 96, of 3 Pennsylvania Pl., Ottumwa, died Aug. 28, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Bill Warhover of Echo Hill Presbyterian Church will officiate. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
He was born near Durant, Iowa on April 20, 1914, to Jens and Elsie (Petersen) Glaser. He graduated valedictorian from Durant High School in 1932. He joined the Navy in January 1942 after Pearl Harbor, serving as Chief Petty Officer during World War II. He served in the Naval Reserves and was recalled during the Korean conflict, stationed at Green Cove Springs, Fla.
He married Hazel Hachmann on Oct. 1, 1949, in Davenport. They moved to Cedar Rapids, where he worked for 26 years at Collins Radio (now Rockwell) as a government inspector of communication equipment used in the military and in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs. They had one daughter, Sandra (Ric) Miller of Ottumwa. Hazel died Jan. 19, 1976. He married Mildred Goodwater on Aug. 6, 1977. She died March 29, 2001. He lived in Cedar Rapids until July 2006, then moved to Ottumwa to be near his daughter. He lived in Ottumwa for the last four years with the help and wonderful care of the staff of Pennsylvania Place and Vista Woods Care Center.
He was preceded in death by his first and second wives; his parents; a sister, Velma Untiedt of Davenport; and special friend, Verda Thurm of Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his daughter; a sister, Eleanor (Earl) Lilienthal of New Liberty; two grandsons, Ryan (Kristy) Miller of Kelley and Joshua Miller of Ottumwa; two great-grandchildren, Caden and Addyson Miller of Kelley; and a stepdaughter, Patricia Goodwater (Jerry) Carter of Hurst, Texas.
He was a member of Echo Hill Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, line dancing, golfing, bowling and playing cards. He often attended the Witwer Senior Center and enjoyed its many activities. He was a longtime member and past chancellor of Knights of Pythias, Star of the West, Lodge 1.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons and his nephews, Ronald and Randy Schnack, Kevin Lilienthal, and Dick Lensing.
Memorials may be directed to Echo Hill Presbyterian Church or to a hospice of the donor's choosing.
