Marek, Maynard M.
Maynard M. Marek, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died on his birthday, Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, surrounded by his family, at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Friday at All Saints Catholic Church by the Rev. David O'Connor. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum. A vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., and after 9 a.m. Friday at the church.
Survivors include his wife, Marie, of 56 years; three children, Alys (Stan) Hawk of Hillsboro, Ore., Kathleen (Steven) Heyer and James (Cara) Marek, both of Cedar Rapids; two granddaughters, Meleah (fiance Lucas) and Erica; sisters, Irene Ayers of Naples, Fa., and Dorothy Waggoner of Urbandale; brother, Edward Marek of Marion; sister-in-law, Maxine Marek of Maquoketa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wencly and Alvina Marek; brother, Dr. Durward Marek; and sisters, Alvina Boos and Mary Dolores.
Maynard was born Dec. 27, 1923, in Anamosa, and graduated from Anamosa High School. He farmed in Jones County before his employment at Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric Co. Maynard married Marie Perry on Oct. 2, 1954, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, St. Lucas.
Maynard was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and usher; a member of Holy Name Society, Catholic Layman, and Knights of Columbus No. 5677. He enjoyed gardening, dancing, singing, family gatherings, and telling jokes.
His faith and family were the center of his life. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
Memorials may be directed to All Saints Catholic Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
