Walter F. Hilmer, 79, of Liberty, Mo., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016, in Liberty. Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include two sons, Teddy (Laurianne) of Kansas City, Mo., and Randy of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Adeline Rompot of Marion; and a brother, Marvin of Lawrenceburg, Ind. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Josh, Linda, Danika and Juan; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his two wives; a daughter, Lynette Vega; three brothers, Eldo, Rueben and Ralph; and three sisters, Gladys, Alice and Mae.
Walt was born Feb. 22, 1937, in Iowa City, the son of Arthur and Edna Hesse Hilmer. He married Nadine Overhiser on Sept. 6, 1959, in Marion. Nadine passed away in 1996. He later married Theresa Henderson on Oct. 3. 1998, in Marion. Theresa passed away in 2009.
Walt was a surveyor for the Iowa D.O.T. for over 43 years, retiring in 1999. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Marion.
Walt had a great sense of humor. He was a faithful, loving, true and kind man. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him. Memorial donations may be given to the Alzheimer's Foundation in Walt's name.
