Gordon Arnold Lauer, 74, of West Union, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at Traditions Assisted
Living in West Union. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union, with the Rev. Ron Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in West Union Cemetery. A public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union.
Gordon was born in West Union on Nov. 7, 1940, to Arnold Henry and Helen Emily (Granger) Lauer. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in Hawkeye.
Gordon graduated from West Central High School in 1958. He attended Upper Iowa University and graduated in 1962, with a bachelor's degree in education. He taught school for a short time in Lowden.
He was united in marriage to Barbara (Miner) Lauer on July 16, 1961, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fayette. In 1963, Gordon joined Lauer and Lauer Insurance and German Mutual. He graduated from the University of Illinois with an insurance degree in 1968. Gordon served on the Professional Insurance Agents of Iowa and Mutual Insurance board.
Gordon was an active community member, serving on the West Union Fire Department, Rotary and Palmer Lutheran Hospital board of directors. He earned West Union's "Citizen of the Year Award" in 1989.
He enjoyed fishing, traveling and Iowa State athletics. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in West Union.
Gordon is survived by two sons, Terry Lauer of San Jose, Calif., and Michael (Lynn) Lauer of West Union; grandchildren, John Lauer and Morgan Lauer; a sister, Sandra (Dr. Stanley) Day of Freeland, Wash.; an aunt, Marge Wenthe; a niece, Deborah Day; niece-in-law, Kelly Day; a great-niece, Talia; and a great-nephew, Zachary.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barb; parents, Arnold and Helen; and nephew, Jeff Day.
