MARGARET OPPELT

Margaret Oppelt, 93, of Dubuque, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017, at home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Church of the Resurrection, Dubuque. The Rev. Joseph Hauer will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. Friends may greet the family from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Rd., Dubuque, where there will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.
Margaret was born Dec. 25, 1923, in Dubuque, the daughter of Peter and Doris (Sackmaster) Oppelt. She was educated at Immaculate Conception in Dubuque. Margaret was employed in personnel at the telephone company in Cedar Rapids for almost 39 years, retiring in 1982.
She was a member of Church of the Resurrection and Telecom Pioneers. Margaret was an avid reader and after macular degeneration made her hobby more difficult, she took delight in using her e-reader to read mystery novels. Having lunch with friends was another favorite activity. Margaret and De Loras enjoyed traveling for the unique experiences, including having lunch behind the Iron Curtain.
Margaret will be remembered as a generous and loving friend, aunt and sister.
Margaret is survived by her dear friend, De Loras Fortman; two sisters, Charlene Kraus and Lois (LeRoy) Weidemann; two sisters-in-law, DiAnn Oppelt and Pat Oppelt; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Lorraine Streif and Carol (Jerry Schueller); her brothers, Peter Jr., John, Robert and Carlton; and her brother-in-law, John Kraus.
A Margaret Oppelt Memorial Fund has been established.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of Dubuque for their care of Margaret.
