An Iowa City man who was involved in a standoff with police earlier this month faces additional charges for trying to flee from custody.
According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, 21-year-old Torian T. Cleggette was in police custody on a probation violation Sunday evening and was being walked into the Johnson County Jail at 9:49 p.m. Sunday night.
Police said Cleggette pulled away from the escorting officer and took off running. Cleggette hid from police for about 10 minutes before he was found and returned to the jail.
Cleggette was arrested on July 7 after Iowa City police received a report of a suspicious vehicle driving past a Davis Street residence and an occupant of the vehicle pulling a handgun on another man at about 2:35 a.m. Officers found the vehicle a short time later, but when they tried to stop the driver, he fled on foot into a Taylor Drive residence.
Officers, as well as members of the department's Special Response and Crisis Negotiations teams, surrounded the house at 7:30 a.m. A woman who lived at the home exited the residence at about 9:30, but attempts to reach the man inside were unsuccessful, police said.
An hour later, police entered the residence and found Cleggette inside, hiding in the attic. Cleggette was taken into custody on previous warrants for possession of a controlled substance and keep or permit use in a structure or vehicle.
Cleggette now faces an additional charge of escape from custody and interference with official acts for his escape attempt. A bond has not yet been set, but the Illinois Department of Corrections has placed a detainer on him.
