Letter: Jan Heikes is prepared to serve

I will be voting for Jan Heikes. She is not only hard working, but capable and community oriented.

Her voice and experience are needed in our Iowa Senate. She has been a tireless advocate for our mentally ill for years and has expertise sorely needed in our legislature especially since our hospitals for the mentally ill have been closed and our Iowa Medicaid has been shifted to out of state for profit insurance companies.

When I was practicing family medicine, I always felt good knowing she was working for the communities in northeast Iowa advocating for our mentally ill, who could not advocate for themselves. She also has been an advocate for those without insurance having volunteered at Decorah Community Free Clinic for many years. She learned how to work with local boards and counties to provide the best care possible.

She has honed these skills for years and can use them on a much broader scale in the Iowa Senate for the benefit of us all.
