Oldis, Philip Earl
Philip Earl Oldis, 79, of Iowa City, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Mercy Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 2, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City. A visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bobby Oldis Fields in care of Iowa City Boys Baseball or The Masonry Institute of Iowa.
Phil was born on March 5, 1934, in Preston, Iowa, to Edward and Emme Oldis. He was a graduate of Iowa City High School. Phil served his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. On Oct. 6, 1955, Phil married Helen Roushar in Iowa City.
Phil was a lifelong resident of Iowa City and worked at Ready Mix, Pest Control and Kings Material before starting Phil's Building Materials in 1984. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, University of Iowa Club Member, Hawkeye Alumni Association, Iowa City Home Builders Association, Monday Morning Quarterback Club and the Masonry Institute of Iowa Board Member.
Phil was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football fan, attending home games for almost 66 years. He also would attend many of the Iowa Hawkeyes bowl games. He enjoyed watching baseball, especially the Florida Marlins. In his spare time, Phil enjoyed bowling, playing euchre and umpiring and playing baseball.
Phil is survived by his wife, Helen; two brothers, Edward Oldis, and Robert (Mary Pat) Oldis; one sister, Doris Hall; brother-in-law, George (Marilyn) Roushar; sister-in-law, Pat Roushar; and many nieces and nephews.
