Betty Jane Garaghty, 83, of Elkader, died Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
She was born Sept. 8, 1930, in Guttenberg, to Jack and Frances (Walter) Mahowald. Jane graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Guttenberg. She was united in marriage to John Garaghty on April 17, 1956, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guttenberg. Five children were born to this union. Jane raised her family on the family farm for many years and later moved into Elkader.
Survivors include her children, James Garaghty of Elkader, Peggy (Ronald) Weiland of Dubuque, Sherri (Daniel) Koenig of Dubuque, Patty (Chris) Marcov of Ames and Kevin Garaghty of Elkader; grandchildren, Ben (Carissa) Marcov, Sam Marcov, Justin (Ashley) Wieland and Emily Wieland (fiance Eric Lahr); great-grandson, Zander Wieland; and sister, Adele Parker of Guttenberg.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Peppy Mahowald.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at Central Community Hospital in Elkader and University Hospitals and Clinics for the care Jane received.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, with the Rev. Paul R. Peters as celebrant. Visitation: 9:30 a.m. until Mass time at the church on Monday. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
