Sherman, Rachael M.
Rachael M. Sherman, 96, of Marengo, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011. at her home. Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Marengo, with Father Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, with a vigil service at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be contributed to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or the Altar and Rosary Society.
Rachael is survived by her children, Melvin Sherman (Dorcas) of Robins, Constance Weichers (Gary) of Horseshoe Bend, Ark., and Jeff Sherman (Laurie) of Marengo; eight grandchildren, Curt Hansel, Dan Sherman, Brad Sherman, Cyndi Sullivan, Rian Sherman, Chad Sherman, Aaron Sherman and Jeffrey Sherman; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Also surviving are a brother, Duane Harris (Helen) of Des Moines; and a sister, Lois Weber (Alvin) of Sigourney.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kermit in 1978; two brothers, William “Bill” and Maurice Harris; and a sister, Theresa Lansing.
Rachael Mary Harris was born Dec. 14, 1914, in rural Keokuk County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Ida Van Dee Harris. She graduated from Webster High School in 1932, and married Kermit Kyle Sherman on Nov. 9, 1935, in Iowa City, Iowa. Rachael was a wife, mother and homemaker. She was a Girl Scout leader for 15 years. She loved to cook dinners for her family, gardening, needlework and playing bridge. Rachael was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Marengo, and the Altar and Rosary Society. She also was a member of the Iowa County Historical Society, the Ingleside Club, the Marengo Garden Club and the Marengo Golf Club.
