David Simonsen, 69, of Hiawatha, passed away Monday evening, July 11, 2016, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, after a long illness. Visitation will be Thursday, July 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Stateroom. Funeral services with military honors will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
David was born Nov. 9, 1946, in Marion, Iowa, to Harold and Mildred Simonsen. He attended schools in Marion. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1968. He met his beloved Marita while he was stationed in Germany. They were married March 21, 1968, and returned to the United States that same year with their daughter, Diana.
Dave and Marita enjoyed camping and just being together. Marita now resides in the memory center at the Villages in Marion. Dave also loved tractors and looked forward to the yearly tractorcades and parades. He enjoyed his Tuesday morning coffee stop at Donutland to visit with friends and his FAC (Friday Afternoon Club) meetings in his Wolf Creek neighborhood.
Dave was a longtime resident of the Marion and Cedar Rapids area and worked at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids for 39 years as a millwright.
He devoted all of his time and love to Marita and his family. He was a loving husband, father and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Marita; daughter, Diana (Raymond) Longoria of Kyle, Texas; grandchildren, Sydney and Ethan Longoria, Garrett Simonsen and Brenden Warner; brothers, Les (Judy) Simonsen of Branson, Mo., and Dennis (Jean) of Marion; sister, Cheryl (Glenn) Mills of Walker; and sister-in-law, Joanne of Roy, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randy; and brother, Steve.
