Burkey, Rick D.
Rick D. Burkey, 60, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Vinton, died peacefully in his home Monday, Sept. 30, 2013. A gathering celebrating Rick's life will be announced. A burial, at a later date, will be in Bear Creek Cemetery of Brandon. Morgan Funeral Choices in Mount Vernon is helping the family with arrangements.
Surviving Rick are his stepfather, Lawrence Wubbena of Marion; his sister, Ronda (Lonny) Walker of Kearney, Mo.; a brother, Roice (Kris) Burkey of Alburnett; two nieces Cody WalkerHolmes and Alyssa Faylor; two great-nieces, Isabel and Julia Holmes; and his faithful four-legged friend, Dug.
Preceding Rick in death were his son, Brok Burkey; and his mother, Lyla May Wubbena.
Rick was born Jan. 26, 1953, in Vinton. He was a certified welder and painter and worked at various manufacturing companies in Cedar Rapids.
He had a passion for fishing, rock collecting and riding motorcycles. Rick had a natural gift for artistry, creating metal sculptures, paintings and wood carvings.
A memorial fund in Rick's honor has been established and may be sent in care of Roice Burkey, 114 N. Third Ave., Alburnett, IA 52306.
