Swisher man accused of stealing golf cart, going on joyride while drunk

A Swisher man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft, a class D felony, and operating while intoxicated after authorities say he stole a golf cart and took it on a joyride in North Liberty Saturday night.

Reports indicate that Grant L. Bontrager, 26, of 1727 Amana Rd., was found by Scales Pointe campground staff at 7:17 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Scales Bend Road and Black Bear Bend. Police said Bontrager was riding a golf cart that was taken from Bobbers Bar, north of North Liberty.

Authorities say Bontrager admitted to driving the golf cart, valued at $4,000, and  to drinking alcohol. Officers said he was making repetitive statements and had unsteady balance.

Bontrager was being held at the Johnson County Jail Sunday morning.
