Newman Jr., Harold Thomas
Harold Thomas Newman Jr., 78, of Mallard Point Retirement Residence in Cedar Falls, formerly of Marion and Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home from complications of a stroke. Family committal services will be Wednesday at Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion. Visitation: 3:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Locke Funeral Home in Waterloo.
Born Dec. 3, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Harold Thomas and Mathilda (Machula) Newman, he graduated from McKinley High School in 1949. On June 20, 1949, he married Margaret Ellen Howell in Chicago. She died Sept. 16, 1991. Harold worked at Wilson's in Cedar Rapids and as a supervisor for the USDA in Buffalo, N.Y., retiring in 1986.
Survivors include two daughters, Norma Jean (Henry) Edsill, Cedar Falls, and Julia Ann (David) Pheteplace, Bonita, Calif.; grandchildren, Peter (Elizabeth) Pheteplace, Aurora, Colo., Allison Pheteplace, Oakland, Calif., Heidi Edsill, M.D., Minneapolis, and Samuel Edsill, Cedar Falls; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Madison Pheteplace, Aurora, Colo.; a sister, Beverly (Kenneth) Martin, Central City; and half-brothers, Jerry O. Newman, Las Vegas, Nev., and Larry O. Newman, San Antonio, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Russell Newman; and sister, Jeane Nelson.
