Schoonover, Raymond M.
Raymond M. Schoonover, 85, of Grand Island, Neb., died Friday, July 13, 2012, at the Grand Island Veterans Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at the All Faiths Chapel of the Grand Island Veterans Home. Military Honors will be performed by the U.S. Army. Burial of ashes will be at Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Pastors Bill Nore and Dorothy Molczyk will officiate. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.
Raymond was born Sept. 28, 1926, at Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Raymond Maxwell and Celia (Meyers) Schoonover. He was raised in Sioux City, where he received his education. Raymond joined the U.S. Army, serving from 1948 to 1952 and achieved the rank of Corporal. He was united in marriage to Erika Wolffgramm in 1952, in Berlin, Germany. They made their home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Raymond retired from National Oats after 25 years of service.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter and son-in-law, Renate and James Pemberton of Villa Park, Ill.; son, LeRoy Schoonover of Crawfordville, Fla.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Raymond was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed working on various crafts in the Veterans Home workshops.
He was welcomed into heaven by his wife, Erika; parents; sister, Melvina Johnson; and a grandson, Matthew White.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Veterans Home.
