Video 1 - Iowa defensive coordinator Phil Parker said Iowa took 29 defensive players to Purdue and played 24. That's max efficiency. He also talks linebacker depth, CB Greg Mabin and his rise and finishes this video with a very funny comment to something OC Greg Davis said.
Davis said he'd love to come back in another life and be a defensive coordinator. Everyone questions when a defensive back gets beat, but no one questions the coverage. (And I can see that point.)
Parker countered with an anecdote from recruiting coordinator and defensive assistant Seth Wallace, quoting a study that said offensive coaches live 10 years longer than defensive coaches.
'I think I'm already affected by the first 26 or 27 years, so I don't think I'm going to expand my life span.”
Video 2 - This one starts with the 'Raider” formation, the defensive scheme Iowa uses on third-and-long passing situations. He said it's something Iowa used under former coordinator Norm Parker (like in 2004-05 against Northwestern).
More praise for CB Greg Mabin. He's played pretty well.
Video 3 - Does Greg Mabin remind Parker of former Hawkeye Bradley Fletcher, who's in his sixth NFL season this year (Philadelphia Eagles).
Parker was asked about juggling linebackers.
I asked about more blitzes the last two seasons. He said no, it's been about 20 percent and Iowa has shied away from zero coverage blitzes (no all-outs).
Has Norm Parker been an influence? The answer is yes. Phil Parker said Iowa runs the system (mostly) that Norm Parker set up.
Video 4 - Parker is asked about CB Desmond King, LB Reggie Spearman and DE Nate Meier.
Parker mentioned the fact that King was a record-setting running back at his high school. A lot of times when you go searching for a defensive back, you only see film of the prospect playing defensive back.
On Spearman possibly moving to DE in the future: 'Right now we feel like this is the best position for him. When we need to, we'll put him in rushing situations in our subpackages, but eventually it could. If he keeps on growing and getting to 245, 250 we might put him down. But I'm sure if he hears that, he's going to stay down to where he's at.”
And Meier: 'One thing about Nate, he's a tough character. He's one of those guys that you want on your side. I think he's a guy that goes hard every time with little disregard for his body. He's a really, really, really tough guy. I think this whole game is about being tough and being violent. He's a violent football player. He's relentless about it. Now he'll make his mistakes like everybody else, but our job is to make him right.”
