Kane County scores pair in 9th to stun Kernels, 4-3

Aug. 12, 2013 10:17 pm
GENEVA, Ill. - Reggie Golden's sacrifice fly to center field capped a two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning as Kane County ended the Cedar Rapids Kernels' five-game win streak with a 4-3 win Monday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Madison Boer (1-1) took the loss for Cedar Rapids (72-46 overall), which remained 1 1/2 games ahead of Quad Cities for first place in the Midwest League Western Division second-half standings. Starter Josue Montanez threw seven fine innings and was in line for the victory before the ninth-inning meltdown.
Jeimer Candelario led off the Kane County ninth with a double to left. He scored on Rock Shoulders' one-out RBI single, with Shoulders moving up to second on a throw to the plate.
Boer then walked consecutive batters to load the bases, and Golden's sac fly ended the game. The Kernels were limited to just six hits, two by Jorge Polanco.
Adam Brett Walker drove in a run for his minor-league leading 103rd this season.
The Kernels have Tuesday night off, then begin a three-game home series against Beloit Wednesday night at 6:35.
