Hill, Charles Randall
Charles Randall Hill, 90, of Marion, was blessed by God on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, with a holy death and taken home to rest in the arms of Jesus to await the resurrection of the dead. Services: 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha, by the Rev. Daniel Krueger, with military honors by Marion American Legion Post 298. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Marion. Graveside service: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Eagle, Wis., by the Rev. Jesse Cearlock (Charles' grandson).
Charles Randall Hill was given life by his creator and was born on Aug. 7, 1919, the child of Charles Roeloff and Louise Marguerite (Randall) Hill. He received the gift of Holy Baptism and became a child of God. Charles was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He instructed sailors and WAVES at Norman, Okla. Charles then attended and received his BA degree from Stout State, Wis.,; his master's from Iowa State University, his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri at Columbia, and taught at the University of Illinois. On Aug. 3, 1944, he received the gift of a beloved companion in his spouse, Mary Elizabeth (Sipple).
Charles was blessed with the gift of a loving family: surviving are his daughters, Catherine (Ken) Cearlock of Cedar Rapids and Mary Ann (Jim) Scott of Ponce Inlet, Fla.; six grandchildren, Jim (Jill), Brent (Lorri), Jesse (Emily), Elizabeth (Ryan), Hannah (Zach) and Abby; and six great-grandchildren, Alec, Ben, Sam, Drew, Ella and Annabelle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and his sister, Marian Schaplow.
God blessed Charles' life with many special people as he served God in his vocations at home, church, work, military, and in the community.
Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha, for the Little Lambs Preschool or Concordia Lutheran Seminary scholarships, in Charles' memory.
The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the staffs of Mercy Medical Center, Hospice of Mercy, and The Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for their loving care and concern during Charles' illness.
