Bergstrom, Melvin 'Meg'
Melvin “Meg” Bergstrom, 92, of Swedesburg, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at Mercy Iowa City following an unexpected brief illness. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Swedesburg Lutheran Church. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Honts Funeral Home in Winfield, where the family will meet with friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
On Aug. 22, 1943, he married Vicky Anderson at Swedesburg. Following his graduation from the University of Iowa in 1943, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an officer on the USS Birmingham. He taught at WACO schools for 22 years and was a lifelong farmer in the Swedesburg area. He was a member of the Swedesburg Lutheran Church, the Olds American Legion, Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the Swedish Heritage Society. He loved the land and his country, and was a loyal member of the University I-Club.
Survivors include his wife, Vicky of Swedesburg; three daughters, Vicki Reschly and husband Chris of Denver, Colo., Ann Bergstrom Sindlinger and husband Bill of Cedar Rapids and Elizabeth Graber and husband Doug of Swedesburg; one son, Brian Bergstrom and wife Diane of Cedar Rapids; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial has been established in his name at the Swedesburg Lutheran Church.
