Koehler, Edward G.
Edward G. Koehler, 86, of Oelwein, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 2, 2012, at Carlisle Rehab and Care Center in Carlisle. Funeral services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, with the Rev. Tim Schoepf officiating. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour before the service Saturday at the funeral home. Military graveside rites by Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9. Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein.
Edward George Koehler was born Aug. 5, 1926, in Hawkeye, Iowa, the son of Edwin Henry and Margaret “Maggie” (Riley) Koehler. He was raised on the family farm near Hawkeye and graduated from West Union High School in 1944. Ed served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines. Ed was united in marriage to Dorothy Jean Duncan on Sept. 21, 1947, at First Christian Church in Oelwein. They farmed on the family farm near Hawkeye until they retired and moved to Hawkeye in 1986. In 1990, they moved to Oelwein.
Ed was a former member of the Hawkeye United Methodist Church and the Barb Wire Collectors Association. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, wine making, framing old prints, antiquing and attending flea markets and garage sales.
Edward is survived by his seven children, John (Donna) Koehler of Cedar Rapids, Kathy Koehler of Des Moines, Kris (Walter) Anderson of Spread Eagle, Wis., Cindy Koehler of Cedar Rapids, Mary Bradley of Decorah, Martha (Kevin) Drewes of Gateway, Ark., and Mike Koehler of Hawkeye; eight grandchildren, Daniel Koehler, Chad Koehler, Justin Bradley, Nicole Cazares, Karri Metcalf, Michael Mesicek, Andrea Cooksey and Amy Vincent; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife (Dorothy J. Koehler on Dec. 18, 2003).
