Monaghan, Paul J.
Paul J. Monaghan, 82, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Marengo, died Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at Hallmark Care Center in Mount Vernon. Mass of Christian Burial: 11 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Marengo, with Father Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Little Creek Cemetery, rural Kinross. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
Paul is survived by three daughters, Mary Kay Harris (Terry) of Lisbon, Pamela Jean Roe (Gene Sutter) of Goodyear, Ariz., and Lisa Ann Greve (Duane) of Kimballton; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Marlene in 1997; a brother, Ronald; and a sister, Mary Phyllis Monaghan.
Paul Joseph Monaghan was born May 7, 1928, in Kinross, Iowa, the son of James and Regina Conrad Monaghan. He graduated from Kinross High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean conflict. Paul married Mary Marlene Zuber-Erue on Dec. 28, 1971, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Marengo. He farmed for many years and then the couple owned and operated the Marengo Variety Store.
Paul enjoyed woodworking and carving. He loved to travel and spend time with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Marengo and previously a member at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in North English. He had also served on the Little Creek Cemetery Board.
Memorials may be contributed to the Iowa Chapter of the American Parkinson's Disease Association (APDA).
