Paula Sue Bissell, 67, of Iowa City, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at Mercy

Iowa City. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City, with burial to follow at Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City, with a rosary at

4:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) or the charity of your choice.

Paula was born March 2, 1947, at Mercy Iowa City, the daughter of Lewis Austin "Ozzie" and Berniece "Bernie" (Helmer) Bissell. She graduated from Iowa City High School in 1965 and received a bachelor's degree in letters from the University of Iowa. Paula worked for various businesses as an office professional and was a mother, caretaker and homemaker. Paula recently retired from her position at Goodwill Inc.

Living in Iowa City her entire life, Paula was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and supporter of the Iowa City High Little Hawks. She was an active and published writer of poetry and short stories.

Paula is survived by her husband, Jose Luis Mendoza-Loredo of Iowa City; her son, Daniel (Jennifer Schubert) of Coralville; sister, Barb

Griffith of Moscow, Iowa; brothers, Richard Bissell (Susan Flashman) of Mount Rainier, Md., Steve Bissell (Julie) of San Antonio, Texas, and Douglas Bissell of Iowa City; and nieces and nephews, Kevin (Elise), Kelli, Justin, John, Jacob, Jordan (Brother Justin), Gabriel, Emmanuel and Stephanie.

Paula was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Ted.
