Eastern Iowa high school football capsules for Week 2:
Cedar Rapids Washington at Cedar Rapids Kennedy
Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium (Kennedy is the home team, and its fans will sit on the west side
Records and rankings — Washington is 0-1; Class 4A eighth-rated Kennedy is 1-0.
Overview — Kennedy began a promising season in extremely impressive style, whipping Muscatine by a 50-6 count. Quarterback B.J. White was the epitome of accuracy, completing 12 of 13 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, both to Sam Harrison. Washington looks to bounce back after dropping a last-second 21-20 loss to Cedar Rapids Prairie, in which it let a 14-point lead get away. Haven Henningsen ran for 173 yards (on 32 carries) and scored a pair of touchdowns for the Warriors.
Linn-Mar at Cedar Rapids Xavier
Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Saints Field
Records and rankings — Linn-Mar is 0-1; Class 3A No. 2 Xavier is 1-0.
Overview — Despite losing most of its starting lineup to graduation after last year's run to the 3A semifinals, Xavier served notice Friday that it's not going away. The Saints blanked 1A power Iowa City Regina most of the way, and opened their season with a 23-6 triumph. Quinn Schulte completed 7 of 9 passes for 64 yards, and also recorded eight tackles and intercepted a pass, while Braden Stovie ran for 107 yards (on just seven carries) and two TDs. Linn-Mar kicked off the Paul James era with a 26-13 loss at home to Iowa City High. It was 13-all in the second half before the Little Hawks pulled away.
Marion at Benton Community
Time and site — 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Van Horne
Records and rankings — Both teams are 1-0.
Overview — Marion's victory over Benton last year snapped a long losing streak and set the Indians on a new path. Marion continued its upward climb by accumulating 586 yards of total offense in a 47-22 dismantling of 2016 2A state runner-up Union Community last week. Trevor Paulsen passed for 281 yards and four touchdowns, three to Blair Brooks. Paulsen also ran for 100 yards, and Chris Mohwinkle spearheaded the ground game with 161 yards. Benton opened impressively as well, 48-0 over Oelwein. Spencer Touro passed for four touchdowns, and the Bobcats limited the Huskies to 151 yards of offense.
Iowa City Regina at Solon
Time and site — 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Solon
Records and rankings — Class 1A top-ranked Regina is 0-1; 3A No. 10 Solon is 1-0.
Overview — Judging by season-opening evidence by both teams, this could be a low-scoring slugfest. Solon quieted a very capable Mount Vernon attack last week in a 19-0 victory, scoring all of its points in the first nine minutes. Coal Flansburg intercepted a pass for a touchdown, then the Spartans turned a blocked punt into another score. Regina dropped its opener to Cedar Rapids Xavier, 23-6, despite 160 rushing yards by Isaac Vollstedt. Regina won last year's contest, 34-0, and has taken six of the last seven meetings in this series.
Pleasant Valley at Iowa City High
Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Bates Field
Records and rankings — Both teams are 1-0.
Overview — Both of these teams took away plenty of positives from Week 1 victories. City High pulled away in the second half and defeated Linn-Mar, 26-13, behind a 10-catch, 128-yard performance by Zach Jones, who scored a touchdown. Pleasant Valley rushed for 288 yards, including 104 by Arthur Braden, and downed Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 41-20. City High prevailed in last year's encounter, 19-17.
Muscatine at Iowa City West
Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Trojan Field
Records and rankings — Muscatine is 0-1; Class 4A third-rated West is 1-0.
Overview — After rallying from an early 14-0 deficit to beat Southeast Polk last week, 37-27, West is a heavy favorite to march to 2-0. Quarterback Evan Flitz threw for big yardage (363, on 15-of-23 passing), but the Trojans got all of their touchdowns on the ground, including two by Flitz. Muscatine absorbed a 50-6 loss at the hands of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Kobe Vasquez scored the Muskies' lone TD, an 11-yard scoring reception.
Western Dubuque at Dyersville Beckman
Time and site — 7 p.m. Friday, at Dyersville
Records and rankings — Both teams are 1-0.
Overview — In no way did Beckman resemble last year's 4-5 team in Week 1. The Blazers had six takeaways in a 58-0 rout of Clayton Ridge. Carter White and Owen Grover scored three touchdowns apiece. Beckman will try to avenge a loss to its neighborhood rival before opening district play next week with a showdown against Waukon. Western Dubuque edged Dubuque Wahlert, 12-10, last week. Carver Conway scored a touchdown, and the Bobcats got two critical field goals from Nathan Armstrong.
South Tama at Williamsburg
Time and site — 7 p.m. Friday, at Williamsburg
Records and rankings — Both teams are 1-0. Williamsburg is ranked No. 4 in Class 2A.
Overview — Williamsburg climbed three spots in a jumbled 2A poll this week after bashing Fairfield, 55-7, in its opener. The Raiders certainly spread the wealth around, with eight different players finding the end zone (Mathyan Powell did so twice). South Tama got past Grinnell, 29-16, behind Colton Vest's 128 rushing yards. Tanner Watz returned a fumble 22 yards for a touchdown. Williamsburg prevailed in last year's encounter, 14-13.
West Delaware at Mount Vernon
Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Mount Vernon (Ash Park)
Records and rankings — Class 3A No. 5 West Delaware is 1-0; 2A No. 5 Mount Vernon is 0-1.
Overview — Mount Vernon will try to bounce back after getting blanked in its opener by Solon, 19-0, but the sledding won't be much — if any — easier against the Hawks, who notched a shutout themselves last week, 37-0 against Independence. That was a game in which the Hawks surrendered just 67 yards of offense, and just 6 on the ground. Quarterback Nick Casey threw for 272 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Give Mount Vernon props defensively in Week 1; the Mustangs allowed just one offensive touchdown against Solon, and that was on a short field.
Washington (Iowa) at Mid-Prairie
Time and site — 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Wellman
Records and rankings — Both teams are 1-0. Washington is ranked eighth in Class 3A.
Overview — We'll know a lot more about both of these teams after this week. Washington opened with a 64-7 rout of Albia while Mid-Prairie took care of Louisa-Muscatine, 42-12. Seven different Washington players scored in the Demons' triumph, led by Jaivonn Willis, who scored once on the ground, once on a reception and once via return. Karson Gingerich threw for 140 yards in Mid-Prairie's win, and Keaton Duwa ran for three TDs.
Alburnett at Belle Plaine
Time and site — 7 p.m. Friday, at Belle Plaine
Records and rankings — Both teams are 1-0.
Overview — After dropping its last eight games last season (and scoring six points in the final four contests), Alburnett looked more than competent in a 48-6 drubbing of North Cedar last week. Tanner Sloan ran for 159 yards and four touchdowns, and Matt Barnett tacked on another 101 ground yards. Belle Plaine handled North Mahaska, 49-14, behind a balanced attack led by Garrett Straight's three rushing TDs.
Cedar Rapids Prairie at Cedar Rapids Jefferson
Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Thursday, at Kingston Stadium
Records and rankings — Class 4A 10th-ranked Prairie is 1-0; Jefferson is 0-1.
Overview — Prairie rallied from a 14-0 deficit and got its season off to a grand start with a 21-20 win over Cedar Rapids Washington last week at Kingston Stadium. Dalton Rayner hit Grant Smith with a fourth-and-10 touchdown pass in the final minute for the game-winning score. Keegan Simmons rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown. Jefferson opened with a 41-20 defeat at Pleasant Valley; the J-Hawks did show some big-play capabilities — James Baugh ran for a 77-yard touchdown, and Kyler Bell caught four passes for 109 yards and a score.
Update: Prairie conquers Kingston again, shutting out Jefferson 28-0
