Gladys E. Ireland, 89, of Wyoming, Iowa, passed away on Sunday morning, Dec. 6, 2015, at the Anamosa Care Center. A celebration of her life will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, before the service, at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Wyoming Cemetery at a later date.
Gladys Elizabeth Jorgensen was born on April 27, 1926, in Andrew, Iowa, to Peter J. and Margaret E. (Hoffman) Jorgensen. She was a graduate of Andrew High School and married Arlo Clayton Ireland on Feb. 1, 1953, in Delmar. He preceded her in death on April 23, 2012.
Gladys was a homemaker and 4-H leader who raised a family and also worked at Collins Radio in Anamosa and Cedar Rapids for five years. Gladys was a member of the Wyoming United Methodist Church where she had served as the church treasurer and was a part of the church morning circle. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, crocheting and jigsaw, crossword and word search puzzles. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Those left to honor her memory include her children, Wade (Kathy) Ireland of Fairfax, Kevin (Cindy) Ireland of Ely, Sandra (Randy) Antons of Anamosa, Lisa (Jerry) Burns of Marion and Joni (Lennie) Miller of Onslow; a daughter-in-law, Carol Ireland of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Helen Knight of Maquoketa; a brother, Marvin (Gloria) Jorgensen of Maquoketa; sisters-in-law, Clarice (Darrell) Kaestner of Newhall, Ruth Jorgensen of Maquoketa and Lucille Smith of Central Point, Ore.; 12 grandchildren, Nick, Eric, Matt, Tony, Jared, Ben, Brice, Cole, Grant, Tabitha, Sara and Lindsay; four great-grandchildren, Grace, Madelyn, Addyson and James; two step-grandchildren, Reggie and Amy; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Camryn and Calen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two children, Lynette in 1966 and Steven in 2008; her husband, Arlo; five brothers, Glenn, Raymond, Robert, Carl and Henry; and two sisters, Thelma and Lorraine.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Gladys E. Ireland memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kilburg and the wound clinic staff, Dr. Banh and the staff at JRMC, the Anamosa Care Center, Above and Beyond Hospice and ECI Transit for their extraordinary care of our mom.
