Selzer, Glenn E.

Glenn E. Selzer, 91, formerly of Fairfax, died Saturday, July 6, 2013. Per his request, there will be no funeral, but instead a celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Calvin Sinclair Presbyterian Church. Family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until service time. Inurnment: Fairfax Cemetery, Fairfax, with military rites. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.

Glenn was born March 2, 1922, in Fairfax, to Adolph and Grace (Buresh) Selzer. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended the University of Iowa. In 1940, he completed flight school and with the outbreak of World War II, became one of the youngest civilian pilot instructors in the Army Air Corps. He married Mary Louise Kiffe on Nov. 28, 1942, in Vernon, Texas. She preceded him in death in 1999. On Dec. 1, 2001, he married Marlene Norman.

After the war, he returned to Fairfax, where he farmed for several years during which time he became heavily involved in the creation of the College Community School District. He was elected to its first board of directors and later resigned from the board in order to become the district's first business manager, retiring in 1984, after nearly 30 years in the position. Following retirement, he was again elected to the school board and served for several years.

During his time at CCSD, he was active in the Iowa Association of School Board Secretaries and Iowa Association of School Business Administrators, serving terms as president of both organizations. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Cedar Rapids Teachers Credit Union, now the Linn Area Credit Union. Selzer served on its board of directors and as chairman of the board for several years.

He and his brother, David, opened the Fairfax Dairy Queen in 1965 and operated it until the winter of 2012. Selzer was a member of the Tuesday Noon Optimists and was a 69-year member of the Fairfax American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene; son, Steve (Marietta Hogan) Selzer, and daughter, Sharon Ham of Iowa City; daughter, Cathy (Ron) Secrist of Ames; son-in-law, Don Pfeiffer of Washington; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his brother, David (Mary Lou) Selzer of Fairfax; several nieces and nephews; and Marlene's children, Don, Susan, Tom, Chuck and Julie.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Louise; his daughter, Cindy Pfeiffer; son-in-law, John Ham Jr.; infant granddaughter, Megan; and his sister, Lorrine Goddard.

Because of his love of education, memorials may be made to the Fairfax Library or the College Community Foundation.
