Fred Meyer, director of Iowa City-based Backyard Abundance, sent the following about a new community event:
Backyard Abundance Hosts Cultivating Community event
To bring together people interested in creating a sustainable and thriving community, Backyard Abundance is hosting the first Cultivating Community potluck event from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday June 19, 2010, at the home of Virginia Melroy, 1512 N. Dubuque Road in Iowa City. The event is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share and eating utensils.
Peaking oil supplies and the effects of climate change will put huge stresses on our society in the near future. Few government officials or citizens are taking action to prepare for a severe reduction in readily available energy and food caused by these crises. A close-knit, diverse, and skilled community is the cornerstone to overcoming these future challenges. Cultivating Community gatherings bring people together who are aware of these issues and want to discuss ways to overcome them.
