Dewey, Thomas A. 'Tom'
Thomas A. “Tom” Dewey, 70, of Iowa City, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City.
Following Tom's wishes, he gifted his body to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy. A celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at the Hills Community Center. Memorial contributions in his memory can be made to Iowa City Hospice. Tom Albert Dewey was born June 11, 1942, the son of Lawrence “L.W.” and Hazel (Small) Dewey. After high school he served in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany from 1960-1962. Shortly after his discharge, he married Joan Brown, on August 15, 1963, in Iowa City. Tom worked for 33 years at the University of Iowa Physical Plant. He was also the founder and owner of the Ammo Bearer, an Iowa City gun shop for over 30 years, until its sale a few years ago. When he wasn't working or with his family, Tom enjoyed guns, motorcycles, car trips exploring U.S. historical sites, and reading. He spent a lot of time reading and was always eager to learn through the books he read.
Tom's family includes his wife of 49 years, Joan; their children, Mike “Maverick” Dewey of Iowa City and Maria Dewey of Minneapolis, Minn.; and his brother, Charles “Chuck” Dewey and wife, Carol, of Iowa City. Tom was preceded in death by his parents.
